Despite the ongoing controversy regarding the National Security Agency and PRISM in the United States, the Indian government has launched an extensive surveillance program of its own. It’s called the Centralized Monitoring System which India is saying will “strengthen the security environment in the country.”
According to Business 2 Community the Indian government is indirectly sending a message that online privacy is a myth and if you didn’t know, get used to it. Their recently implemented Centralized Monitoring System (CMS) will monitor posts on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn as well as track search queries submitted by Google, all by “selected targets.”
The system is in place to enable the government to monitor all phone and Internet communications in the country. It will provide the National Investigation Agency centralized access to the country’s telecom network and facilitate direct monitoring of phone calls, text messages and Internet use by removing the procedure of gaining access from private telecom operators.
With the CMS in place, security agencies no longer need to seek a court order for surveillance, leaving the power solely in the hands of officials. To add to the woes of India, the country has no privacy law in place.
